  • THE DANGEROUS POWER OF THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION (NRA)-PART 2

Other NRA claims in the mailer include a 1995 quote from Attorney General Eric Holder. The mailer quotes him saying we need to “really brainwash people” against guns. The comment came in a discussion about the need to change public opinion about firearms.  As a U.S attorney, Holder said, “What we need to do is change the way in which people think about guns, especially young people, and make it something that’s not cool, that it’s not acceptable, it’s not hip to carry a gun anymore, in the way in which we’ve changed our attitudes about cigarettes.”

The NRA mailer also targets Obama’s regulatory adviser, Cass Sunstein, for saying in 2007 that he wants to ban hunting and that animals should be represented in court.  Sunstein, a law professor at Harvard University, did say those things but he also walked back most of his comments in 2009 as he was joining the Obama administration.  “I strongly believe that the Second Amendment creates an individual right to possess and use guns for purposes of both hunting and self-defense,” Sunstein said in part.  Politifac rated this claim against Sunstein “half true.”

The NRA did earn a “True” for its claim that Obama is “trying to slash funding for the Armed Pilots Program designed to prevent terror attacks.”  However, it’s not necessarily clear that a cut to the program — which was scrapped by the Republican-controlled House — should be considered anti-gun.  The federal government has budgeted $25 million a year since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to deputize and train volunteer commercial pilots to carry firearms on commercial flights. But as part of his proposed 2013 budget, Obama wants to cut funding for the program in half.  “In an ideal world, one without budget constraints, we would fully fund the program. We’re not in that environment, so we are taking reductions,” Transportation Security Administrator John Pistole said.  Critics say the move was political. The $12 million-$13 million in potential savings comprises about 0.15 percent of the entire TSA $7.6 billion proposed budget.

Relying on a secondhand quote of Obama — relayed to Washington Post by gun control advocate Sarah Brady — the NRA claimed that “Obama admits he’s coming for our guns, telling Sarah Brady, ‘We are working on (gun control), but under the radar.”  The genesis of the quote is a brief 2011 White House meeting between Obama, Brady, her husband Jim, and former Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence president Paul Helmke.  Helmke told PolitiFact there was no promise from Obama on gun policy, and certainly no dramatic pledge to come for anyone’s firearms.

Brady told Politifact that her quote has been misinterpreted and that she never spoke with Obama about gun policy. “Whatever I might have said or agreed to was purely speculative as I never spoke to the president myself about this issue,” she said.  Whatever was said and what it was referring to is murky, but the NRA took a fragment of an unclear quote and prescribed the most far-reaching, conspiratorial conclusion — when there simply isn’t enough evidence for such a sweeping claim. Politifac rated that claim “Pants on Fire.”

Against the failed lobbying efforts by the NRA, on September 13, 1994, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain assault weapons.  This 10-year ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law’s sunset provision.  Congress never re-enacted the ban because of the deep-pocketed 4 million member NRA that has a vice-grip on Washington and the unwavering alliance of the Republican Party.

In a recent interview on Fox News Sunday, Supreme Court Judge, Anthony Scalia, said that, “the [second] amendment does not apply to arms that cannot be hand-carried. It’s to keep and bear. So, it doesn’t apply to cannons. But I suppose there are handheld rocket launchers that can bring down airplanes that will have to be (looked at) … it will have to be decided.”  “Yes, there are some limitations that can be imposed,” he said.  Justice Scalia, the most conservative judge on the Court, is suggesting that limitations on assault weapons could be imposed by the Court if a direct challenge to the Second Amendment were made.  I believe that the ban should be reinstated especially in light of the recent Colorado murders, but that’s just my take.

  • THE DANGEROUS POWER OF THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION (NRA)-PART 1

The National Rifle Association (NRA) with over four million members, is the most powerful gun lobby in the United States and maybe even in the world.  Until last year, I was a member of the NRA because I am a strong supporter of 2nd Amendment rights.  However, I surrendered my membership because I no longer wanted to be associated with an organization that advanced lies, fabrications and drastic policies just to promote their agenda and existence.  Given what happened to Gabby Gifford in Tucson last year and what went on recently in Aurora, Colorado, I believe that certain gun control legislation and regulations are essential.  For example, why would any American citizen need to own an AK-47 assault or AR-15 rifle or have access to an unlimited amount of ammunition or even body armor without some justification?  The NRA apparently believes that anyone should have access to guns and an unlimited amount of ammunition regardless of their mental stability.  To further justify their position, the NRA has unleashed a host of lies against President Obama as an attempt to influence his reelection as the President who wants to take away our guns.

The Second Amendment concern is no longer an issue in American politics.  The NRA is winning and the Obama Administration has done nothing to aid proponents of gun control.  Nearly one in two Americans have a gun in their home and only 26 percent favor an all-out ban on handguns, down from 60 percent in 1959, according to a recent Gallup survey.

Here are some facts that the NRA refuses to share with its constituency: The NRA does not want to remind its members that President Obama signed a bill in 2009 that allows people to carry loaded guns into most national parks.  In 2011, he basically avoided a discussion about strengthening gun laws following the shooting of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and he received a failing grade from the nation’s preeminent gun control group, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence.  In addition, there is nothing on Obama’s re-election website concerning gun policies.

Rich Wilson, a GOP political consultant said, “The gun control debate is over.”  “We live in a country where guns are a fundamental part of mainstream American culture. The moment I saw that Walmart now sells AR-15s (a type of semi-automatic rifle), I knew the debate was over.”  Of course, the NRA will not discuss the President’s policies that have supported the NRA initiatives.  In a new campaign mailer, the NRA is casting Obama as a gun control crusader who is “coming for our guns.”  PolitiFact put some of the NRA’s claims to the Truth-O-Meter.

The NRA says that Obama supported former Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy’s proposal “to outlaw all deer-hunting ammunition.”  That is a lie.  The NRA claim is cherry-picking an extreme, worst-case interpretation of a 2005 amendment to expand the definition of armor-piercing ammunition, which is legal to own or use in the United States but illegal to purchase or make.  Kennedy’s proposal had nothing to do with deer hunting, but the NRA contended it could be threatened by the bill. Yet Kennedy said his proposal wasn’t meant to target rifle ammunition commonly used to hunt deer, and since the language was never approved, we don’t know how it would have been applied. More importantly, we have no idea if Obama would have supported a hypothetical deer ammo ban as the NRA claims.

It is absolutely ludicrous to believe that a Democratic administration would have risked the political fallout of trying to use this section to prohibit rifle ammunition,” said William Vizzard, a criminal justice professor at California State University-Sacramento and a former Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms agent. “The Democrats have avoided all gun control controversies assiduously.”  To ban deer-hunting ammunition “would be suicide politically,” added David “Mudcat” Saunders, a pro-gun Democratic strategist. “There might be some way the NRA could twist the facts. But it’s not true.”

  • AN AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT EMERGES IN TWENTY-FOUR (24)

During vacation with family and friends in July 2012, a good portion of our time was spent watching the first two seasons of Twenty-Four (24).  If you are a Twenty-Four or Jack Bauer fan, you may recall that the opening season revealed the first African American President of the United States, David Palmer.  During his presidency, Palmer faced a myriad of unprecedented disasters mainly focused on terrorism activities.  A major situation that exasperated Palmer’s presidency was an orchestrated attempt by his Vice President, members of his cabinet and Palmer’s Chief of Staff to overthrow his presidency because they did not agree with a policy decision involving an unwarranted war.  Consequently, they contrived a series of lies and fabrications to illustrate the fact that President Palmer was unfit to continue to serve as President.  The Vice President, Chief of Staff and a majority of the cabinet members were all white men.

For me, an interesting parallel is drawn between what President David Palmer was experiencing in Twenty-Four compared to what President Barack Obama has been experiencing since his inauguration in January 2009 – having his presidency under minded by a radical group of predominately white men who do not believe that he is fit to serve as President of the United States as well as facing a major economic crises.  Through the financial resources of the Koch Brothers and other right-wing radical people and organizations, this white, hateful constituency continues to use every lie and propaganda they can formulate to discredit the legitimacy of President Obama as a person as well as his presidency.

In addition to the characterization of President Obama as Boy, a “power hungry arrogant black man,” Barack, the Magic Negro, a Socialist and a Muslim, a component of the Republican Party has continued the debunked birther conspiracy.  Orly Taitz was the first to carry this birther nonsense to the courts where she was discredited in every legal venue only to have the issue reactivated by chief narcissist Donald Trump and racist Joe Arpaio, Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, who is currently fighting in Federal court against profiling (racism) charges.

On May 22, 2012, the state of Hawaii verified President Obama‘s birth records to Arizona’s elections chief after a nearly three-month back and forth that Arizona officials said could have ended without Obama’s name on its November ballot.  Joshua Wisch, Special Assistant to Hawaii Attorney General David Louie, told the Associated Press in an email that the matter is resolved after Hawaii gave Arizona the verification it was looking for.  Unfortunately, because of the consistent barrage of lies by a radical fringe of the Republican Party promulgated by Fox News commentators, polls show that one in four Americans believe the birther garbage.

Willard Mitt Romney continues to levy fabricated and unfounded attacks on President Obama and his policies but has yet to provide a specific plan on how a Romney presidency would be a better alternative.  Romney says that he is a “job creator,” but he has influenced the creation of a countless number of jobs in China and Mexico rather than in the United States.  His major US job creation achievement was moving Massachusetts from 50th to 47th.  Romney also says that he embraces American values yet he has millions upon millions of dollars stashed away in off-shore tax havens like Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.  Romney also refuses to release his tax returns.  The 2010 Tax Return that Romney did release did not include a copy of the required IRS Form 8938 showing his millions in foreign bank accounts yet he represented that it was a complete return.  I don’t suppose his Mormon bible contains 1 Timothy 6:10, which says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.  Some people eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Along with members of the Republican Party and their far-reaching allies including the Koch Brothers, Karl Rove, Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, Romney surrogates continue to conjure up ways to bring down the Obama presidency and even deny him the opportunity for a second term.  In addition to the recent birther conspiracy orchestrated by Trump and Arpaio as well as Limbaugh’s accusation that Obama “hates America,” the most astonishing remark for me was John Sununu’s comment that he “wish this President would learn how to be an American.”  One of Romney’s most recent attack dogs, Sununu was born in Havana, Cuba and became a nationalized citizen of the United States.  When does Sununu’s naturalized citizenship give him the right to say that Obama is not an American?

The Twenty-Four series do not disclose President Palmer’s margin of victory but we know that President Obama won by a landslip with well over sixty-nine million votes representing 365 out of a total of 538 electoral votes.  Yet, even before Obama had completed his inauguration ceremony, some on the right were plotting his downfall.  This right-wing fringe calls this Americanism; I call it “disgusting” and whether we want to admit it or not, it is wrapped up in “blatant racism.”

President Palmer eventually prevails.  His policy decisions were proper and his presidency fully restored.  The Vice President and members of the cabinet who voted against Palmer did submit resignations.  Although he fired his Chief of Staff, Palmer did not accept the resignations.  President Palmer continued to prove his leadership and integrity as the first African American President.  Twenty-Four first aired on November 6, 2001, and seven years later, an African American President becomes a reality.  What an amazing revelation by the Twenty-Four producers!

President Obama does not have conspiracies within his administration but has had to deal with an economy in dire rescission including two unfunded wars that were bequeathed to him by former President Bush. President Obama also has been obstructed by Republican House and Senate leaders influenced by Tea Party radicalism, he has to deal with an array of hate mongers who refuse to acknowledge his legitimacy, and there is a well financed conspiracy to deny his reelection.  In spite of all of these challenges, President Obama’s accomplishments have been commendable and he will prevail in November 2012 to serve a second term.  During his second term, he will continue to demonstrate strong national and international leadership, integrity, competency and determination to ensure that the United States of America continue its role as world leader.
