  • MY TAKE ON THE OBAMA AND ROMNEY FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

On Wednesday, October 4, 2012, it is estimated that 60 million viewers watched the debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney.  As the debate unfolded, I, and probably a number of other folks, was both astonished and even bewildered as to what was transpiring during this 90 minute spectacle.  Immediately after the debate, many pundits determined that Romney was the winner and that President Obama had basically a lackluster performance.  To me, President Obama seemed to be unusually reserved and not really on top of his game.  However, regardless of what the pundits are saying and perceptions of President Obama’s performance, the “jury is still out” on who won the debate and the final decision will be made on November 6, 2012.

It was obvious to me that the Romney game plan was to approach the debate in an aggressive and condescending manner levying attack after attack on the President.  Romney’s performance should not surprise anyone considering the Republican presidential debates where Romney virtually destroyed the other candidates.  The only time that Romney seemed to be knocked “off stride” was when Rick Perry pushed him to a point where the only card he had left to pay was a $10,000 bet to Perry.  The most astonishing part of Romney’s performance was his blatant and myriad lies.  In an article I published here on March 26, 2012, entitled, “Willard “Mitt” Romney, the Biggest Liar,” I stated, among other things, that “Romney will say anything to become President and is obviously infected by “foot in mouth disease.”  He seems to distort or misrepresent the facts every time he opens his mouth and while many of us presume politicians will “stretch or embellish” the truth to suit their cause, Romney has made it a profession. Once a liar, always a liar, and savvy Americans will never elect this liar to the White House…..”  During the debate with President Obama, I was flabbergasted at the extent and nature of the Romney lies.  Here are a few.

Romney stated that, “We’ve got 23 million people out of work or [who have] stopped looking for work in this country.” A Romney lie. The unemployment crisis is bad but Romney knows that there are 12.5 million unemployed not 23 million.  An additional 2.6 million Americans have stopped looking for jobs.  Romney counts more than 8 million wage earners who hold part-time jobs as also being “out of work.” What adds to Romney’s sensationalism is the fact that some of the 12.5 million unemployed people are part of that 47 percent Romney says he can’t do much for.

Another lie that Romney pushed in the debate was that, under Obama’s plan, there will be a board of experts who will decide what kind of medical treatment a patient can get:  Obamacare “puts in place an unelected board that’s going to tell people ultimately what kind of treatments they can have.” As President Obama stated during the debate, Obamacare does establish an Independent Payment Advisory Board to help constrain the growth of Medicare spending. The body has no authority to dictate the practices of the private insurance marketplace. And the law also makes explicit that this body is banned from rationing care or limiting medical benefits to seniors.  With Romney, the facts just don’t matter.

Romney claimed that he is not cutting taxes for the wealthy and actually began the debate by reinventing his tax plan.  Romney claimed that his tax plan isn’t a $5 trillion tax cut.  Even though Romney has talked about his 20% tax cut over the past year, just the day before at a Campaign rally, his running mate, Paul Ryan, touted Romney’s 20% tax cut across the board.  Ryan said, “And so what we’re saying is, we’re going to lower tax rates for everybody across the board by 20%, and we can pay for that without losing revenue by closing loopholes for people at the top end of the income scale. Everybody gets lower tax rates as a result. And you can keep these preferences for middle class taxpayers and have 20% lower tax rates.”

Romney claimed his tax plan doesn’t raise taxes on the middle class.  Mitt Romney used some strange arithmetic to claim that his plan doesn’t raise taxes on the middle class. However, the centrist Tax Policy Center found that, “that Romney’s tax cuts would boost after-tax income by an average of 4.1 percent for those earning more than $1 million a year, while reducing by an average of 1.2 percent the after-tax income of individuals earning less than $200,000.”

Romney claimed that Obama would increase taxes on the top 3% of “small businesses.”  Another lieWhat Romney didn’t say is that he and the Republican Party have a exceptional definition of small business. Washington Monthly explored the Republican definition of small business stating, “Many of those 750,000 small businesses aren’t small at all. Some, like Bechtel Corporation, are positively enormous. The Democratic and Republican figures come from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation. But numerous think tanks and government organizations have examined the data and come to similar conclusions: First, that letting the Bush tax cuts on the top two brackets of “small-business” income would impact a tiny percentage of those businesses; and second, that many of the “small businesses” that would be impacted are actually giant companies — which explains why such a tiny fraction of them can account for half of small business income.”

Romney claimed that the subsidies for Big Oil go to small natural gas and coal companies. The truth is that $2.8 billion in subsidies go to the five biggest oil companies. Big Oil is also allowed to write off all of their drilling costs. The American people are paying Big Oil to deduct their operation costs-what a sweet deal.

Romney also claimed that if the Bush tax cuts expire for the wealthiest Americans, it will kill jobs. Forbes debunked this myth and concluded that, “the GOP memo suggesting that tax cuts equals jobs while, conversely, tax increases on the so-called “job creators” mean less work for the rest of us, simply does not survive any reasonable scrutiny. Putting more money in the pockets of the wealthy may create a few jobs for the foreign bankers who get to count the extra money funneled into the off-shore accounts of the rich, but there is nothing in the way of actual data to support the notion that putting more money into the pockets of the wealthiest Americans will inure to the benefit of those looking for work.”

The last Republican President lied the American people into an unnecessary war with Iraq where over 4,000 Americans lost their life, and as previously stated, a savvy voting public will not elect another liar to the White House, especially one who has told more lies that truths, that’s just my take.

  • THE SECRET RECORDING OF WILLARD MITT ROMNEY

This past May 2012, Willard Mitt Romney attended a $50,000 per plate private fundraiser in Boca Raton, Florida.  Romney didn’t know that the fundraiser was being “secretly videotaped” and during a questioning period, Romney explained his views on half of the voting public. This now infamous video made its way to Mother Jones’ magazine and was released by journalist David Corn.  The highlight of the video featured the following statement by Romney:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percentho are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. … These are people who pay no income tax. … My job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Romney’s distorted 47% comments about Americans who don’t pay income taxes are a favorite talking point for many conservative Republicans, who often use them as evidence that America’s expenses are paid by a relatively small portion of the populace, while the rest — in Romney’s words — don’t “take personal responsibility” for themselves.  What is missing from the discussion is an identification of who makes up this 47%.

According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, 53.6% of Americans pay a portion of their income in federal income taxes, and 46.4% don’t.  Of those who don’t, 61% (28.3% of the population) pay payroll taxes, such as Social Security and Medicare, but have enough deductions and tax credits that their federal income tax liability has shrunk to zero. Basically, 81.9% of the population is gainfully employed and provides some measure of their income to the federal government.  As for the rest, 10.3% of the population, 22% of non-income tax payers are elderly and likely retired.  An additional 6.9% are non-elderly but have incomes below $20,000 poverty line.  It’s not as though the rest of the 47% (actually, 46%) are doing especially well because almost 90% of this group consists of households making less than $50,000 per year, and 80% make less than $30,000. The remainder is mostly composed of higher-income households that benefit from significant tax credits for children and education.

About 162,000 Americans among the top 10% of earners avoid paying any federal income tax. This includes approximately 3,000 people in the top 0.1%, a group who make more than $2,000,000 per year.  A large part of their low tax rate, The New York Times’ Bruce Bartrlett suggested, lies in the fact that many — like Romney — derive most of their income from capital gains, which are taxed at only 15%. To further reduce their liability, many are able to offset their taxes because of losses that they took in previous years. Alternately, some invest in tax-free municipal bonds or take advantage of a slew of other tax loopholes.  Willard Mitt Romney is part of this group.

As Ezra Klein explained in an article recently published in The Washington Post, many tax cuts for the poor were enacted to make tax cuts for the rich “more politically palatable.”  The tax breaks passed into law in Reagan’s second term and Bush’s tenure were accompanied by large increases in the number of households that were exempted from paying taxes. In Reagan’s last few years in office, the percentage of households not paying taxes jumped by more than 10%. Under Bush, it increased by more than 25%.

Jim Messina, campaign manager of Obama for America, responded to the Romney tape with a statement:  “It’s shocking that a candidate for President of the United States would go behind closed doors and declare to a group of wealthy donors that half the American people view themselves as ‘victims,’ entitled to handouts, and are unwilling to take ‘personal responsibility’ for their lives. It’s hard to serve as president for all Americans when you’ve disdainfully written off half the nation.”

The clips from the private Romney fundraiser provide astounding insight into a candidate who has closely guarded his true feelings as he tries to find an approach that works with the small percentage of voters he believes are still persuadable.  But that’s not all that the video revealed.

In the video, Romney also commented about on a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.  Romney said that the Palestinians did not want peace and only sought the destruction of Israel, and that he would not actively pursue the peace process but he would instead seek to “kick the ball down the field,” and that he had paid no real attention when a former secretary of state had told him that peace might be possible in the Middle East.  Romney’s comments represent a drastic break with US policy which has supported a two-state solution since the Clinton administration.

On Wednesday, October 3, 1012, Romney and President Obama will meet in their first televised debate.  Romney is a skilled debater, having participated in19 debates during the Republican primaries.  President Obama, while an articulate speaker, has not debated in four years and may be a bit “rusty.”  However, the President’s biggest debate asset is the fact that he has been engrossed in all of the issues for the past 3-1/2 years.  Romney’s biggest debate challenge is that he must be specific and accurate in his responses, otherwise his campaign is dead.

  • MITT ROMNEY, A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO LACKS PRINCIPLES, CREDIBILITY AND INTEGRITY-PART II

World Net Daily (WND), a very radical right-wing website, was one of the early proponents of the birther garbage.  Jerome R. Corsi, a WND senior staff reporter, wrote a book on birtherism entitled, “Where’s The Birth Certificate.”  Sales of that book made a lot of money for Corsi and WND until President Obama issued his long form birth certificate; then the sales stopped.  Corsi was enjoying such a financial windfall because of the birther conspiracy that he and WND have now orchestrated a new bogus conspiracy claim that, “Obama hid ‘gay life’ to become president.”  (I will deal with that nonsense in another article.)  Although both Donald Trump and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio continue to advance their birther conspiracy, they are not running for President so their birther nonsense doesn’t matter.  However, Willard Mitt Romney has now slumped to a new low by “subtlety” embracing the debunked birther conspiracy in an attempt to pander to his base.  While campaigning on August 24, 2012, in Commerce, Michigan, Romney said, “No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”  The Romney campaign said that the statement was just a “joke,” but Romney has embraced the most vociferous voices in his party instead of standing up to them especially by given time at the RNC Convention in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach, the Kansas Secretary of State who wanted to remove Obama’s name from the state’s ballot in November unless his citizenship is confirmed.

On Wednesday, October 3, 2012, the first presidential debate will be held and this will be a time when the American people will get to hear and see which presidential candidate has charted the best course for America.  President Obama has very clear and specific policies from the economy to national security.  Romney, however, has provided a “word salad” containing a hodge-podge of ideas with absolute no specificity.  When asked about the debate, Romney said:  “I think the challenge that I’ll have in the debate is that the president tends to, how shall I say it, to say things that aren’t true. And in attacking his opponents. I’ve looked at prior debates. And in that kind of case, it’s difficult to say, well, am I going to spend my time correcting things that aren’t quite accurate? Or am I going to spend my time talking about the things I want to talk about?”

This is a statement coming from a man who is known for his lies, fabrications and flip-flopping positions on important issues.  Romney’s debate challenge will be his basic ignorance on national security matters and his ability to consistently obfuscate his proposed policies on the economy, healthcare and a budget in addition to his refusal to release past tax returns.  Romney is probably afraid to debate President Obama and I believe would pull out if he could.

In all of Romney’s campaign stops and interviews, he has been consistent in saying that he will “repeal all of Obamacare.”  All means all!  Even Paul Ryan’s campaign rhetoric includes a statement that a Romney/Ryan presidency will repeal all of Obamacare.  However, when David Gregory asked Romney about repealing Obamacare during his recent appearance on Meet the Press, Romney’s response was astonishing.  Romney said, “Well, I’m not getting rid of all of health care reform. Of course, there are a number of things that I like in health care reform that I’m going to put in place. One is to make sure that those with pre-existing conditions can get coverage. Two is to assure that the marketplace allows for individuals to have policies that cover their — their family up to whatever age they might like. I also want individuals to be able to buy insurance, health insurance, on their own as opposed to only being able to get it on a tax advantage basis through their company.”  What??? Romney wants to repeal Obamacare but replace it with Obamacare?  Wow. Well the grandeur of illusion or in this case, an apparent gaffe, is not always what it seems. Right after the Meet the Press appearance, a Romney aide clarified that Romney didn’t really mean what he said about Obamacare.

Pulitzer Award columnist Eugene Robinson wrote on September 14, 2012, “But health care is no ordinary issue. Bringing universal health insurance coverage to the citizens of Massachusetts — via the individual mandate — was Romney’s greatest accomplishment as governor. This is subject matter he truly understands. He knows full well that if he fulfills his promises, or threats, regarding Obamacare, there won’t be any affordable coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. He knows that if he follows through on Medicare and Medicaid, seniors will have to pay more for their care and many poor Americans won’t receive adequate care at all. No wonder Romney has so much trouble sticking to a consistent story.”

Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his vice presidential candidate, the way he insulted England, our closest ally, while trying to establish international prominence, not mentioning Afghanistan or Iraq during his Convention speech to show that he would be a compassionate Commander-in-Chief, how he mishandled the killing of the four American diplomats in Libya with his premature and bogus statement about President Obama, embracing the birther conspiracy with his so-called “joke” while pandering to supporters in Michigan, and his “astonishing” performance on Meet the Press, provides enough evidence to conclude that Willard Mitt Romney is not only a very poor presidential candidate, but a person who lacks principles, credibility and integrity.  He has certainly not earned the privilege of serving as our President and the American people will terminate that aspiration on November 6, 2012.
